Have you ever played DDR? Dance Dance Revolution that is? Well, my teenage nephew is a complete whiz at it! When he introduced me to it years ago, I was blown away, watching him and trying to keep up. The skill set needed for this activity is all encompassing.
This game requires one to be simultaneously both mentally focused and physically active. When you play this game, you follow the arrow pattern on the screen which is choreographed to the music you choose. With each beat, there is an arrow letting you know where on the dance mat to place your foot and how long to keep it there.
Hold on to your hat, it is thought provoking and happens to be highly aerobic! DDR is a whole new generation of movement made for a new generation of kids. But here's the thing, it's great for adults to participate as well. This, in my opinion, is a fantastic, fun way to be interactive and healthy as a family.
It is exciting that some of the schools are tapping into the video sports craze to grab the attention of their students and promote healthy activates. "Video Games Get Kids Healthy” is an article in the Daily Banner written about a middle school in Cambridge, Maryland that is directly implementing in their curriculum both DDR and Wii, another video game that promotes physical activity.
The stats on the poor fitness and health levels of children are staggering. The upside, however, is that positive changes are in the works. I look forward to being a part of creating these changes for our children. They are the next generation of children that will one day fill the shoes we wear today.
