A Dancer's Legs

Here's a great combo of exercises to get you dancer legs working for you right now.

The Plie/Relevé combo has been and still is a series of training exercises used by dancers every day. It is exercises like these that create the long, lean legs of a dancer.

Try it out! This free Plie/Relevé Workout Video will help you tone your gluts, hamstrings, quads, and calves.

Gluts: The big one! The one they write songs about. No, really, the gluteus maximus combined with the gluteus minimus and gluteus medius, is the largest muscle group of the body.

Quads: The quadricep muscle group is comprised of four smaller muscles that run down the front of your leg. Many people call this your "thigh."

Hamstrings: The hamstring muscle group is in the back of your leg and it is actually made of three muscles.

Calves: The gastrocnemius is the large muscle of the calf. The soleus is the smaller muscle that merges underneath the gastrocnemius. These muscles engage when you raise our heel, (that's a relevé!)

So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance is without a doubt my favorite show on TV today! Yes, I love it even more than Dancing with the Stars. Let's face it for a dancer, instructor of movement and someone simply passionate about the art - it's ALL Great! But, to me So You Think You Can Dance is special. I just love the technique and creativity the dancers have to offer. There is some absolute true talent on the air and it is awesome!

Season Four auditions are starting February 2008. I look forward to setting my DVR to catch the next season; I often rewind and re-watch routines on the show, so it'd great to have it recorded.

Move like Michael Jackson?

Are you a Michael Jackson Fan?

Do you remeber the great creativity in his moves and his music when he was in the limelight? I just came across a workout DVD by Anthony King, Thiller Dance Workout DVD. It looks like great fun, a good workout and he really breaks down the steps to get you movin' like Michael with slides, moon walking and all!

Movmnt: the magazine

Do you remember Danny Tidwell from So You Think You Can Dance, Season Three? I literally find myself breathless when watching him dance. His line, his grace, his ability to "fly" through the air with leaps and jumps, and his deep connection to the experience make for perfect entertainment in dance.

I was so excited to learn that Danny Tidwell is the co-founder of Movmnt, a magazine of fashion, dance, and pop culture as a lifestyle. The first official issue will be on stands in February, 2008. Last week, I picked up a Fall, 2007 copy while at Broadway Dance Center. I enjoyed reading all of it, including an article by Mia Michaels, as well as interviews with Ingrid Michaelson and Jamie King. Rather than explain to you what the magazine is all about, here is a quote taken from the magazine's Letter from the Editor, David Benaym: "We aim to bring fashion, dance and pop culture together as a lifestyle."

So what does this have to do with fitness?

In my opinion, Everything.

Dance as a lifestyle is Fitness!

Can you find a way to dance - and by dance I mean MOVE! What is your personal style of dance? How do you like to move your body to feel good?

• What is your inner dance like?

• Can you connect to the movement in an emotional sense?

• Can you allow yourself to feel freedom in the music?

• What inspires you to "Get up and Boogie?

We can find ways to do live dance in the purity of movement.
We can find inspiration to live dance by using music.
We can become excited to dance via pop culture.

To emulate the life of a dancer is to find movement in your life on a daily basis. It can be avenue to be healthy, fit, flexible, strong and free!

It is not a new concept, but I'll state it anyway, if you enjoy what you choose to do as exercise, you'll be more likely to take part in it.

I offer a suggestion to you for 2008; find a way to express your inner best. Is it by jumping around with your kids, dancing in your living room, doing Dance DVD’s at home or taking a dance class?

Try it! You'll be happy and healthy in the process!
